Our community’s rich and varied cultural assets fall under six broad groupings, each with a wide range of sub-categories.
These are our community’s non-profit and commercial cultural industries. They include theatres, museums, art galleries, commercial galleries, film and video production houses, fashion designers, interactive digital media producers, and more.
These community groups include historical societies, genealogical societies, artist guilds, ethno-cultural organizations, Municipal Heritage Committees, and others involved in arts and heritage activities.
These form our community’s richly diversified calendar of regular or recurring events that includes multicultural celebrations, gallery or studio tours, film festivals, music festivals, public art tours, and more.
These are the places in the community where creative or cultural activities take place. The resource list includes galleries, music studios, libraries, archives, music schools, live music venues, recording and broadcasting studios, and more.
These include significant heritage buildings, heritage conservation districts, monuments and historic plaques, cemeteries, historic battle- fields, among others.
These are significant natural heritage features and resources such as Conservation Areas, botanical gardens, bird and wildlife sanctuaries, provincial parks, and more.
Culture is like the DNA of a society; it defines the attributes that make us distinct, as a people, among the wider populations of the world. It answers the question "What’s Windsor Essex all about?" in deeply meaningful ways that reveal our innermost character. Here’s how local contributors describe its importance:
Culture is the "local flavour" of our community. It’s the "expression of self" of the people – both the historical and the fanciful – who have lived here. It comes to us through writings, music, art, fashion, dance, festivals, institutions and more. It includes the physical and geographical structures that remain from our past and that helped shape our present. Culture is the sum of what we have been and is an arrow that points toward what we may become.
